Escorts for exceptional transport are mandatory in a number of cases relating to the size of the vehicle and the route.

Technical escorts are necessary when the width of the road to be traveled is less than 3.50 metres and the vehicle width exceeds what is prescribed in the highway code. Escorts are mandatory when the vehicle width is greater than the driving lane, for which these vehicles are classified as exceptional or bulky vehicles.

Most exceptional road transport, therefore requires escorts of appropriately licensed qualified personnel.
